Advice as you age

Aches and pains do not have to get in the way of your lifestyle as you age. Here are some healthy tips to keep you active:

  • It is advised that 150 minuets of exercise per week, in blocks of ten minuets or more can reduce the risk of falls and circulation problems. Exercising can also help to improve your mood and your over all well-being. Overexertion is not recommended, you should exercise enough to make you warmer and breath harder, whilst still being able to have a conversation. This might include activities such as brisk walking or dancing.

  • Eating a varied diet.

  • It is recommended doing some form of balance exercises twice a week (for example Tai Chi) to help reduce the risk of falling, especially over the age of 65.

  • Wearing appropriate footwear is important as the correct shoes can help to balance the feet and align them with the rest of the body. If you would like further advice about foot health please contact our podiatrist/chiropody .

  • Rest is just as good as being active. A short rest can help you recover energy as it is an equal part of the total progress required to strengthen and balance muscles.
